En 1968 Routennberg realizó una sorprendente experiencia. En su laboratorio, observó que las ratas sometidas a una dieta restrictiva podían sobrevivir con relativa facilidad. Sin embargo, si esas mismas ratas, sometidas a idéntica restricción alimentaria, tenían la oportunidad de hacer ejercicio físico gracias a tener libre acceso a un rodillo, incrementaban progresivamente su actividad física hasta morir exhaustas.
